Cryo-Focused Ion Beam (FIB) micromachinery
Starting in 2018, NeCEN gained cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) micromachinery capabilities, allowing the production of thin sections of cryo-preserved material, i.e. whole vitrified cells, using a dual-beam SEM microscope. The removal of some sections of the sample by ablation thought the impact of heavy ions produces "windows" inside the cell. The remaining material, in the shape of wedges or lamellas, can be further explored by cryo-ET.
